Thursday Night Run in UP

The 15K Mizuno Infinity Run left me quite sore and it took me 3 days to recover from it. Because I took a bit longer than usual to recover, I did not run until the Thursday after. The exciting thing about it was that a few of my officemates had also planned to run in UP that night, as the day after was a holiday.

It took us an hour just to get to UP because of the terrible traffic that night. We did our own stretching exercises and walked for about 10 minutes to warm up. And then, we were off!

Jen and I went ahead as we had planned to do a tempo run. The goal was to run 3 rounds around the oval in under 14 minutes for each round. We were able to the first 2 rounds within our target. The last round was quite difficult. It seemed that the battle was in the mind as my whole body was telling me to slack off and give up. I just told myself to keep on going. I was actually talking out loud telling myself to finish the 3 rounds without letting up on speed and effort.

I finished with a time of 39:26. I know I there were times before when I did much better, but lately it’s been quite difficult finding the time to run. Way back in February this year, my fastest time for 3 rounds around the oval was 36:20. Anyway, this particular run made me feel good. I also felt the strain in my legs. It’s no use thinking about the past I guess. I’ve got to work with what I’ve got in the present.

It was great having new running buddies around. I hope they too pick up the love for running.

Mizuno Infinity Run: 113.87 Kilometers Racing

The Mizuno Infinity Run 2009 was my ninth race since I started running and finishing it marked 113.87 kilometers racing and a total of around 464 kilometers running. Too bad I only started my running log in February this year.

Coming from the IE8 run last week, I developed a sore foot such that I was limping the Monday and Tuesday after the race. By Wednesday, with the help of a painkiller and anti-inflammatory pill, the pain subsided, but I still felt that I had keep off my foot whenever possible. I decided forego running the whole week to make sure I could run the Mizuno Race.

The race appeared to be well-attended. I was at The Fort by 5AM and I could see that there were already many runners warming up and chatting near the starting line. The race organizer called all 15K runners to proceed to the starting area where he announced that there would be a change in the race route. Instead of passing by The Essensa, the route would be extended from the railroad tracks at Buendia all the way to Bautista Street, which would be the turn-around point. The route was also extended on the way back to the finish line near BHS.

I listened to the short and simple message of Sen. Pia Cayetano, and shortly after, we were off! I am not sure, but I think it started right on time, as I believe most Rudy Biscocho-organized races do.

The race route was familiar. Traffic in Makati came to a halt again because of the race. I believe there were enough water stations. There were even some Gatorade stations along the way. To help me counter my lack of sleep and training the week before, I brought along some raisins to give me a bit of a boost.

There were times I had to take walk breaks (especially on the Kalayaan Flyover on the way back), but I made it a point not to walk for too long a time. Nevertheless, I’ve got to work on this. I could shave a lot of time off if I could just run this one straight without walking.

I finished with a time of 1:34:19 (unofficial) which is only 30 seconds better than my last 15K Race (Happy Run). They gave out finisher shirts and free Gatorade at the finish line. Starbucks was also there to give out free coffee drinks and some promo coupons.

Later on, Mizuno revealed that they had planned another race on January 10, 2010 and that prizes would await runners who registered the best improvements from the day’s race. Hmm… Good thing it was a secret or else some runners would have slacked off. Anyway, it’s great that again, I have another race to look forward to.

Finally, to my high school and college friends at the race, it was great seeing you. To the others that didn’t make it, I hope to see you next time.

For now, it’s on to the next race. Our own company-sponsored JG Summit Employees’ Fun Run!

(For some reason, my official time is 1:38:27. The unofficial time of 1:34:19 is based on my stopwatch reading which I activated as the gun went off signaling the start of the race. The two were supposed to be synchronized.)

Racing in the Rain

I probably was one of the many who wondered whether this race would push through as it has been raining since Friday evening. At 4:30AM, I figured that I’d be running in the rain and so I prepared for it by bandaging my feet to keep me from getting blisters. I just read from another runner’s blog that running with wet socks and shoes can cause blisters.

I got to The Fort at around 5:25AM. I was happy to see that there was already a good number of racers gathered and warming up for the race. I met up with Jen and Meng at the parking lot and we proceeded to the check-in area. They decided to go to portalets first while I tried to do the stretching and warm-up exercises led by a couple of Fitness First Instructors.

Shortly after, I approached Jen and Meng as it appeared that they had a problem since they were in the middle of the field looking down at their shoes. It turns out that a small portion of the rubber sole of Jen’s shoes was peeling off. Not having an extra pair of shoes to wear, Jen just peeled them off and we went into our respective check-in area.

I decided to do some limbering exercises while waiting for the start of the race. I positioned myself around 5 rows from the front. I was just thinking about what happened to me when I started at the back in the Condura Race last March where I had a difficult time passing slower runners in front of me. Anyway, there were some familiar faces, but then none that I knew personally.

The race started on time and I began running at my usual race pace. I noticed that many people were passing me by and so I started to worry that perhaps it's been such a long time since my last race that everybody improved their performance except me. Well, it's probably more likely that I had situated myself too far in front. After 15 minutes of running, I felt that everyone was running at a pace faster than mine so I increased my pace to keep up, but soon after I started to feel my legs get tired. I had decided to forego the first water station as I felt that I didn’t need it yet. When I got to the Kalayaan Flyover, I decided to slow down as I could feel my leg muscles start to complain.

I was a bit surprised to see that the turn around point for the 8 mile route was much further away than the Makati Post Office, as shown in the race map. Nevertheless, I just kept running. It turns out that the route reached the train tracks near South Super Highway before turning back. By this time, I was really tired, but I just paced myself and told myself to just keep running.

The items offered at some support stations were interesting. Some had Jello, Bananas, Chocolates and I even heard from someone that a station was giving out ice cubes. Another station was giving out Coke instead of water so I just declined the offer.

When I got back to the Kalayaan Flyover, I couldn’t take it anymore so I walked on the way up. I was brisk walking upward to conserve strength. When the it leveled off at the top of the Flyover, I started running again. Before I knew it, the finish line was in sight and soon it would all be over. I clocked in at 1:18:31.

I remembered to drop my raffle stub in the box provided and then I made my way to the water station. My legs were quite sore as I could feel that I may have pushed it a bit too far. After drinking a bottle of Rush at the parking lot, Jen, Meng and I decided to hang around and see what was at the booths. There weren’t any freebies except for the IE8 software so we decided to hang around to see who would win the Mizuno GCs, the Microsoft Zune, the HTC Cellphone or the HP minibook.

The race was actually a great experience. This was my first time racing in the rain. Too bad we all forgot to bring a camera because now, we don't a single picture to show for it.
